What to Know and What to Ask

What You Need to Know When you Hire an EMF Consultant to Test your Home or Office

by Kay Siefken, November 2019

Years ago I moved into a new rental condo north of Seattle and was having some health issues. I read an article about EMF (electromagnetic fields) and decided to find someone to measure EMF in and around my home.

It wasn’t easy to find someone with that skillset but eventually I found a high school physics teacher who did this kind of work on the side. I had no idea what to expect.

He showed up in the pouring rain and spent some time outside. He then came inside and did some further testing. I could see him writing numbers on a piece of yellow paper. He never spoke to me while he was measuring.

After he finished his measurements he told me everything was ‘ok’. He handed me the yellow paper with the numbers scrawled on it. I paid him, he left and I wondered what the heck had just happened. I can laugh about this now but please don’t let it happen to you.

Here’s what you need to know…..

  1. Before the EMF consultant ever comes to your home or office, ask them for their credentials that qualify them to test specifically for EMF. Are they trained to do this work?
  2. Ask them what they will be testing. RF, electric fields, magnetic fields? They should be testing for all three types of EMF to give you a good sense of what is going on in your specific environment.
  3. Ask them what standards they use to determine whether the results are “ok” or “high” or whatever else their conclusion is.
  4. Ask them whether their meters are capable of measuring to the “low” levels outlined in Precautionary Guidelines. Many consumer meters are not able to measure those levels.
  5. It’s important to have very low levels (based on Precautionary Guidelines) in bedrooms and high-use areas both inside and outside of your home.
  6. Ask questions about the specific EMF-related concerns you have.
  7. Ask what is included in their on-site report. At a minimum it should include the measurements and areas of concern if they were found. A better report includes recommendations and addresses your specific concerns.
  8. If a solution is recommended and implemented (for example, RF shielding fabric curtains are installed in the master bedroom), verify the results. You can schedule a quick follow-up appointment with the EMF consultant to re-do those specific tests to confirm the solution is effective.
  9. If you don’t understand something that the EMF consultant is telling you or feel overwhelmed by the process or information, always ask for clarification.
  10. Pat yourself on the back for having taken an important first step. You now know what your specific EMF situation is in your environment.

They say “knowledge is power” and I always say that “applied knowledge is true power”. You have empowered yourself and can begin to take action steps required to protect yourself and your family from high EMF in your living or work space.
